During the gold rush, people flocked to California for the promise of gold and fortune. Many came to Stockton, a tent town at the time.
The Stockton Police Department
was founded on August 14, 1850, by 1907, the Stockton Police Department had 18
members. As Stockton grew, the Police Department added one of the first canine units,
tactical units, and motorcycle units on the West Coast.
Today, the Stockton Police Department serves a population of over 300,000.
We remain dedicated to making a difference in our community. The Department is currently comprised of about 400 sworn Officers and over 150 civilian personnel.
Working as a police officer in Stockton is rewarding and offers a variety of opportunities. As an officer, you will patrol assigned areas to ensure the security of life and property. You will enforce state, local, federal laws and ordinances; restore order; protect life; and maintain peace in our community.
Stockton Police Officers are certified through the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
